Rocky: Wow, you got hit bad!

Boarding house was crazy. 9 people were in our dorm and I was the only one who knew anything about earthquakes. Got them to stand in the doors before sending them to the evacuation place. Had to run back as all I had on was a shirt and underwear and some of the girls weren't up yet.

Stood outside for an hour, some of the girls freaked at the first aftershock. Then everyone from each boarding house went into our common room and we had to sit there until 8.30 before we were all given exactly five minutes to get changed, put on contacts and get basic necessities like a change of clothing and wallet. Then we all had to go home with our parents for at least three days, for students like me who don't have parents here, we went with friends.

There are cracks in our walls, inside and outside - one crack in the wall got bigger with every aftershock (ignoring the Doctor Who reference) and the chimney completely fell off. Some of it fell onto a skylight but didn't break through and other parts fell to the ground.

Earthquake is now officially 7.1 instead of 7.4 on the Richter Scale

To lighten things up: Christchurch, shaken not stirred.

Yup but we were lucky because it was the weekend. There were only 20 people in my boarding house and 50 people overall. If it had been a weekday, there would have been 150 girls in + instructors

Shoooooot. The sewage system is already spilling, I think so, that is BAD.

Aftershocks seem to be building back up.... Or maybe it's just because I'm home now, and upstairs X:

I have more pictures that I got on the way home - the river around the edge of Porrett Park has a long island in it now.

Watching the news. I thought I was being lied to when I was first told.

I'm going to make myself up an emergency pack today! Boil enough water for every person and pet in your house, you need 2L per day and aim for 3 days. Pack it all up in plastic milk bottles or something. Throw in some of every medicine in your house ESPECIALLY the prescriptions. Handful of tampons/etc, few rolls of toilet paper and a little first aid kit - bandages, sticky plasters and disinfectant at minimum. Some canned food you can eat cold (spagetti, baked beans, tinned fruit) - enough for three days per person and pet and a few can openers. Some blankets and warm clothes. Put it all in a plastic container in a spot you can grab it on your way out of the house!

Freaking out!

Re: EARTHQUAKES!
Post By silly-jess. 03/09/10, 12:46 pm

Oh gosh it was all really scary, wasn't it? Still freaking out.

Scared because I got to my doorway during the main earthquake and yelled out to my stepsister in the next room and she didn't reply. It stopped a little and I ran to her room to find her in her bed wanting to know what was happening. No one here was hurt and the only major damage was to our chimney which will have to be taken off because it's not safe anymore. My sister and her boyfriend drove over from the other side of town straight after. We told them not to but they did anyway.

I've heard from Bex (sorry I don't know her username, she was haruhi at the ball) and Frozon, they are both okay.

extra info: They weren't expecting it because it was caused by a fault line they didn't even know about yet. They aren't sure yet if this has built up more stress or relieved stress on the major fault line along the alps, only time will tell.
