Downtown Backpackers Accommodation- come join!

I havent actually been to Wellygeddon before, hence the questions:
Where do you usually stay when you're in Wellington for Wellygeddon? Where would you recommend and why?

Update:
I've booked at Downtown Backpackers which is very close to the venue... and we're organising a 'Walking Bus' so feel free to join us!

Do you have any mates down there that you can crash with? Backpackers are good too, there are quite a few located really close to the arena. I can't remember which ones exactly...but if you google map Wellington & the backpackers there, you should be able to find the closer ones easily :)

Usually check www.wotif.co.nz and www.travelbug.co.nz for a general idea of the options. They've both got map display options aswell so you can see how far away from the Queens Wharf Events centre they are.

Yeah, I have some people I can crash with, but would rather pay for a room, than inconvenience someone. Thanks for the links, I've already seen Wotif, but I'll check out Travelbug too.

The places are affordable, but I was mostly wonderin if there was an equivalent to the "Charlie B's" of Christchurch that people are staying in?
I saw the YHA place, at best.
But Im not too worried about about distance from Con since I was gonna taxi there and back anyway, as I'll be lugging around my big guns.

Depending which backpackers you stay with, I'm sure a taxi would find it funny driving you 100m down the road xD.

I think it was ... I can't remember what it's called, but it's opposite the train station, and on the same road as the 'geddon building. But I heard that that one was booked out for that weekend.

Another one is close to the city council building and the library, which is slightly further, but still a good walking distance (... if not lugging a lot of stuff xP).

But both of these ones appear to be very good, and have been where people have stayed in previous years.

Just on the wotif & travelbug side - check both listings, Wotif has a $5 booking fee, Travelbug doesn't. If they've got the same package, you may aswell book through travelbug, if they've got a special 2 or 3 day discount deal on wotif, then yeah, work out which ones going to be cheaper to book through. ;)

Downtown Backpackers is like a 5 min walk to the convention centre, I stayed there last year and was very impressed with their services. That's probably the closest backpacker there I think.

@TinTango: Have you booked yet? Amura has a space open in her Accommodation Group, you could crank it with them?

She is staying at Nomads...with her mates (two fems and one male so far...)

Thanks SS but I've already booked now... I kinda panicked when I saw the room availabilities dwindle, so I've gone ahead and booked it. Still, open to hanging out afterwards and buying pizza... or whatever?

@TinTango: Im out in Island Bay for accommodation...lol but on the Sat we are having a Alice in Wonderland Screening...We can all hang before/during/after the film...LOL
