Know where to buy shells?
Post By Tails. 22/01/10, 06:36 pm

So I want to make a shell bikini (from real shells) for my Ariel cosplay Very Happy DISNEY FTW!
I mished around Palmy most of yesterday & just couldn't find any! Any idea of where to get them? Preferably large ones, Disney modesty here guys. ^_^

I'm sure I don't need to put a ref pic for Ariel, but I will anyway because I like googling Disney.

Going to the beach might be best.

You will make a FANTASTIC ARIEL! <3

I've never seen a scallop shell more then 4 inches across :'( ... then again I haven't been looking. I think they mostly live in the South Island.

It sounds weird but maybe the science center gift shop- it's the sort of thing educational toy shops might have.

Maybe try "Island Magic" I think it's in terrace end.

The only place I know that you could get shells that large is paua shells. And they are not suitable. (In Blenheim if you want to try).

Given the perfectly symmetrical, perfectly fitting/sized shells I would suggest either

1) Look online and try to find a site merchandising Ariel Tops.

2) Make one out of purple material. Maybe even padded to give the ribbing to the shell.

3) Since you are going to have to paint it anyway, so you wont see the shell as such, then craft it out of moulded plastic or craft foam or some other method?

I would suggest they look better than a shell. Also most shells are notoriously brittle, and that could be disastrous. Paua would be strong enough, but they look nothing like that.

If your wanting a shell feel & texture you could try making your own out of plaster.

Or even getting plastic shells and making plaster casts from them, or even try this with the plastic shells:
Sand the outside (or top) of the plastic shell to roughen the smooth, shiny surface.
Next apply a thin layer of Selleys Spakfilla/Permafilla (The Warehouse sell 1.5kg "just add water" bags for about $20 or 500gm read mixed tubs for about$10-$15) or plaster. Try to work as quickly as possible and get it as smooth as possible.
Sand back uneven bits with 180-200 grit sand paper and smooth off with 280-300 grit.
This part is optional:
Spoiler:

If you are worried about the plaster cracking, paint some PVA glue over it. Be careful when doing this, you want to dip your brush into the PVA and paint it on. Depending on the the plaster or filler you use, if you squirt the glue on it, too much liquid might dissolve it. The PVA will harden the plaster a fair amount and also add some waterproofing to it

Thanks for the advice guys!

@Cookie Monster- You sound like you've made shells before?

@Mischa- Thank you! Ya know how everyone has that one character they do all the outfits of? I think Ariel is mine Very Happy

& I'd love to go hunting at the beach for them, but personally I've never seen ones that big on the beach before. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough though. :)

Did spot this on trademe, theres only one, but if you think it looks suitable you could possibly use it as a mould to make a couple of plaster or latex ones?
