| Well not really she said most the cosplayers on this forum are from Auckland (also not surprising since this was originally an Auckland forum, therefore they knew about it longer?), but don't forget many cosplayers don't go on here as well ^^; or they join up and don't post LOL xD
Heh I think there'll be a lot more, I have over 50 contacts in the chch cosplay club email list. Although, if I remember right, I think Welly has had the most cosplayers entered in an armageddon contest, wasn't it like 60 or so? o_O
Having said all that, for it to be successful we need to have the most numbers we can get. So how can we judge which city has the biggest number of cosplayers. How many turn up to picnics? Armageddon? Or just looking at whose on this forum (even though its the turnout we're after.)
Eh its so hard, and no matter what city is picked, many wont be able to make it cause of money (and permission) especially for its first time. But we have to start somewhere, sometime _________________

| Maybe, if we can plan it right and know what to do for it.
We can do this event before the Armageddons. Like if we can only do it when Auckgeddon is nearby then we'll goto auckland.
idk.
This forum needs more cosplayers. Especially from Whangarei or higher |

| I'd say theres well over 200 cosplayers scattered through NZ, but it depends on quite how you work it out. For the purposes of this forum it probably doesn't count SCA people, etc, but a few of them (ie: michaela - our cosplay judge for armageddon) do cross over into cosplay pretty regularly. Same with the outpost42 (starwars) people.
The catch will be picking the time and location. If you pick it around the time of one of the geddons people would probably make both, on the downside it can be harder to get time of work/school/uni two weekends in a row. Let alone the tail end of the week to join the two. Also the younger ones that are still stuck in school will have an even harder time if it's out of town for them. Getting time off school. Plus convincing folks to let them go out for the gathering.
Given the timings I'd probably say it's almost better to arrange it as far away from one of the geddon timings as possible. Spreads it out through the year a bit more. Then it's just down to location. Personally I favour Wellington since I'm based here aswell, but just thinking on timings thing, DO is 25th Jul (Hyatt Hotel - Auck) according to the site. Depending on where your planning on having the weekend could possibly combine the two? Get as many cosplayers up to Auck for the weekend. Storm the Hyatt hotel for a bit while DO is on, and then Sunday to do whatever else on. :)
Any opinions? I haven't been to DO before but the Auck peoples did make an appearence there this year, and it's the next closest thing to an anime type gathering we have in NZ, which coindicentally happens to fall more or less between the Mar/Apr and Oct Geddons. :) |

On this forum. In Wellington there's atleast 50. 50 entered the competition, and many people who were cosplaying didn't even enter. Plus I also know that many of the Wellington people would not travel to another place for cosplay. None of them go to other Armageddons :/
| Rikashiku wrote: | Well the guys above did just say there are alot more in Auckland :)
I heard there is a number of 2000 in NZ. idk, probably more like 200. 100 in Aucks and the rest scattered xD |
That sounds very off :/ More than 50 in Wellyington, 50 or so in CHCH, quite a few in Dunedin, and then there're tons of places around NZ that have cosplayers. New Plymouth has a TONE. I swear o___o. There were atleast 20-30. Plus I there's about 7 or something in New Plymouth from what I've heard. Which already goes well over 200. |

| My issue with this entire idea of organising a con for just us - oh my GAWD we are disorganised. I mean SERIOUSLY. Getting a cosplayer to commit to anything is like trying to get milk out of a stone!
Auckland Ball - cancelled due to lack of ticket sales Wellington Ball - I'm having SO much trouble getting people to buy a ticket, even people that declare loudly and repeatedly that they're so totally coming. Geddon - how many of us are finishing our costumes on the way or that weekend?
And Wellingtontians have good reasons for not travelling - out of the core group of Wellingtonians only about 6 of us have actually moved out of home, about 4 of us have drivers licences and most of us have been doing NCEA/University. October is a really REALLY bad time for us to take a weekend away As the group ages a bit, I'll bet more of us travel. But that's not really the point here
Actually, I think numbers of people showing up to each 'Geddon IS a good indicator of the best place for the weekend - if you'll travel to 'Geddon, you'll travel for another weekend.
I've said it before, but price is also a major factor. I really reckon booking a hotel is going to bump the price up. Just looking at some international prices - Lots of the US ones are $25-$40 a day (VERY brief look) and those have such monstrous through-put that each person is probably contributing a very small amount to the venue cost. And these anime -cons are CHEAP. You look up a specific fandom con -
Nullas Anxietas (AUS Discworld Con - $135 for the weekend) - OMG there is a "Only Fools and Horses" Con??!! - Chevron 7.2 (UK Stargate con, 78 pounds for the weekend) Eternal Twlight (UK Twilight Con - ditto) The Hub - UK Torchwood Con - same again - think some of these ones are run by the same guys.... And this act of lunacy - http://www.creationent.com/cal/sgvan.htm#tix - it's a Stargate con run in Vancouver which as far as I can tell runs to $200US a weekend because it includes location tours and the like.
Whereas Wadfest is a specifically camping UK Discworld con and it's 20 pound for the weekend. Camping in ENGLAND and they still get thousands of people and has been running for 8 years straight now. |

I agree with what JP says, if you're going to DO anyway, why not put it together with this cosplay weekend thing. One of the reason why I didn't want to travel all the way up there was cause it only goes for one day.
But instead of going by the majority of where cosplayers are located, perhaps it would be better if you sort out the date first(or possible months) find out who can/can't come and then find a location site.
Money and permission is a speed bump, but seriously, there's no way in hell we could do it next year, right? Something this big would be best to left as a discussion topic until things are thoroughly hammered out. |
