[CNZcon] ~HUGE~ NZ Cosplay Weekend Event
By Auroa. 19/05/08, 11:35 am |
| the idea started out like this: (taken from the I'm curious... poll-thread asking what area everyone on the forum lives.)
| Aurellion wrote: | | Now if only we'd all invade -one- convention, ALL in cosplay. XD That would be so incredibly EPIC. X3 |
| Aura wrote: | oO... we should so organise a HUGE NEW ZEALAND COSPLAY PICNIC something so epic we would come from all parts of the country for... better yet make it like a cosplay weekend... |
| pyro wrote: | | Alternatively; we all go on a cosplay road trip. |
| Duckeh wrote: | | I believe they do something like a weekend at a hired out hotel in the states. All of us NZ cosplayers in a hotel.. COSPLAYING |
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...
Basically hold a cosplay weekend at some place once a year, switching that place every year (could be North Island, South Island etc) We could stay in a hotel or camping ground. There would be games, performances, skits, dances, photos shoots, contests, competitions, prizes.
Would you be keen traveling from where ever you live in NZ, to come to a cosplay weekend?
Admittedly it would be an expensive weekend, money to travel to the area, and money for hotel… and yeah I know it would depend on when, where it was held, and moneys, not to mention permission and moneys. Also the fact that everyone would want/need to be reassured that it had been organised thoroughly and be worthwhile to travel up/down/left/right to get to xD
so... out of interest, give an indication?

| heh, given the scp planning I guess this one was inevitable. :) I'd be interested in attending depending on when/where, and um, yeah, probably not in cosplay, although who knows, I might have made the leap by then. Given all the other stuff that's underway and if you're trying to all of NZ I'd suggest lining something up for next year, but it's up to you.
Either way, yeah, I'd be interested, and would contribute ideas. :) |

| SO GOING!
The problem would be getting a time outside of exams and stuff, so maybe during the summer hols (for those of us who don't work) because it will also be summer, and thus less likely to rain all over our <strike>parade</strike> picnic. |

| Pick a superlative :-D Oh hell with that. Just assume I've jumped around for 20 minutes saying them all :-D.
It would mucho depend on timing, as with a great many of us I guess. Like, I can start listing times between now and this time next year which are no good, but thats not helpful.
What IS helpful (hopefully) is that I'm actually involved in planning something extremely similar (although rather bigger and involving 1000 odd people and tens of thousands of dollars) for Harbour City Quilt Symposium. So I can give some serious ideas on planning and legals (mother darling dearest being an just-barely-retired lawyer and convenor of said quilt con).
The main issue I can see is whether or not we would have central organisation. Like, a committe that booked out the hotel/camping ground and we all pay money to the committee. Or do we all just pick a spot and converge. And these all come with own issues - do we bother making an incorporated society, what happens with leftover money et cetera et cetera.
Although the actual arranging of events on the day/s would probably be fairly straight forward. |

| OH HEY! My name's up there~ xD
Angie & I had a conversation about this a few weeks ago about it~ I think we thought the first might be held in Auckland next year??? Central location so we could do things like spookers, rainbows end etc.
So basically our ideas were something like- ++Spookers one night for those old enough, movie screenings for those not [at the hotel or at the movies~] ++A night where we all sit outside && have a little stage or just somewhere for people to do skits && to MC the cosplay competition, be retards~ OH OH~ WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY STYLEZ?~ ++Photoshoots during the days~ ++OTHER STUFF I MIGHT HAVE FORGOTTEN.
I think if we booked early enough && had quite a few interested the hotel/motel/motor lodge [Some of the motor lodges I've looked in to are cheap, pretty cool && look like what we'd probably want!] whatever, then they'd probably be willing to knock down a bit for the price for the group. I think. Or so I've been told~ Meh~
I think it'd be great though~ 8D
Suggestions people!! n.n
u_ne_korn- I would presume an organisation of such would come up with a total including hotel coverage etc which we would ask you to pay in advance. They'd probably ask for hotel money + a little more for prizes and other bits & bobs they'd need to run something like this. Also we might need to get buses to places so~ That'd cover that to? If we planned far enough in advance then there should be no left over money as everything would be a certain price? O_o
Really~ I havn't looked too deep into this yet so I've only done a teeny bit of research~ xD
I really dunno what I'm talking about!! Sleepy~ ;-; _________________

| Well in theory everything would be a certain price. But theory does occassionally go out the window :-D. You're right though that a central organisation does have the advantage of being able to make mass bookings, potentially at a discount.
I personally, would be more worried about suddenly owing extra. Thats where an Incorporated Society comes in handy, coz they can be declared bankrupt and no one person is left holding the bill.
My only worry is that the sort of thing you're desribing would run to... well a lot. Probably a lot more than those not working could spring for (and I know that "not working" desribed a good 70% of the Wellingtonians) even with advance planning. Advance planning might get people to and from Auckland for $100 (but only might. It might run as high as $2-3-or-400 especially if we decide on a long weekend), Rainbows End is $40, Spookers is somewhere between $17-40 depending on how many attractions you go to (and yes I am checking their websites :->) and movies is nearly that much in Auckland. Even discounted hotels in Auckland and packing people into rooms like sardines I can't imagine people are looking at less than $20/night, and to make it worthwhile it'd have to be 2 or 3 nights. Plus a share of the bus-hire and food for the weekend. And thats assuming that the relevant young person's parental units (also a major factor for many Wellingtonians) doesn't announce that they're accompaning them or their not going, in which case, nearly double the cost for the parents of such attendees. Coz lets face it, the young 'uns can't cough up $200 dollars for a weekend on their own. Heck, even when I was working full time, I'm not sure I'd've coughed up $200/weekend.
And reading back over that it's very critical. Sorry, I don't mean to be! It's just that I honesly don't believe the majority of the Wellingtonian cosplayers could possibly afford the sort of thing you seem to have in mind! |

| I understand that completely. Of course it's going to be expensive, hence why we're trying to find out if it's going to work & if it is we're trying to give people untill next year to come up with money.
Lol~ We've been to spookers before & yes I relise the amount of attractions such as rainbows end etc... You still get discounts at those to for groups, I'm not saying it'll be an amazing amount off but I'm still just pointing it out~ xD
These things would be optional~
We'd collect money before the event etc for what we as a group would be paying for... I mean like a month in advance?
Agh. I'm tired so I do relise I'm not answering you in the right way~ ^^' Sowwi~ _________________

actually this idea was before scp xD I didn't even think of the relationship until you just said hahah. Yes, we'll convert you to cosplaying eventually jp... heh.heh.heh. it'll be like "whose that guy? Oh its THAT GUY!" I'm sorry couldn't resist =P poor you, you have all these good ideas and take awesome photos and this is how you're treated ^^;
and um... ahh to many words, its too late ;; okay not really. It feels late after coming home from work anyway.
UM.
yeah the attractions can be optional... I didn't even think of the attractions when I wrote that post hahah. I mean the next(next) year it might be held in a place that has no attractions. oO' so the only moneys will be transport/accomodation and foods etc (lol 'only') We'd still have heaps and heaps of things planned. _________________

| Na you has pointed out somethings!
Discounts do apply, of course.
But just for some perspective, and I do realise that not all the variables are the same, but for the quilt con I'm involved in organising we're booking out a hotel over Easter next year and I'm pretty sure the deposit has already been paid. I know for sure that its been booked, number of rooms spoken for and dinners organised for those staying there. And we're not even taking the majority of the thing - it's only the tutors/judges and staff. I doubt (but of course don't know for sure) that you'll be able to book out a hotel/motel a month out and I doubt you'll be able to book out the place without a deposit.
I think that its going to be paying at least some of the money more like 3-6 months out, which requires ever so much more commitment and organisation from people.
There is a huge amount of responsibility required here, and I don't want to put people off, but it needs to be said.
I think about 100 cosplayers would be a resonable target. Make it 150 people to take into account parents/significant others/children coming along. Make it... $150 dollars that any given individual would be paying to the organisers. *pulls out calculator*does SERIOUS double take* Who is going to take responsibility for $22,500? Let me just repeat that. TWENTY TWO THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS.
I'm sure as hell not going to put that in MY bank account. |

| Okay. We were still only in the idea process of it all. But you want me to think up quick solutions? Okay.
Commitment is needed anyway, we don't want people who arn't commited & will pull out. If we need to pay the deposit for the hotel 3-6 months beforehand we'll obviously get people who are going to do this. That's what we want, not people who will keep saying they will and drop out two week before. I said a month as I havnt done this before && didn't think that all through. xD But obviously I'm going to research this aswell as anyone involved with planning.
We could always start a joint account at the bank seeing as this will be an ongoing thing supposedly. We'll have three committee leaders who can sign for it.
Please note we were in no way discussing the details yet. We hadn't decided to go through with the idea & were simply asking who of you would be interested. So of course we weren't prepared for answering these questions yet. I'm trying my best, but of course it's going to sound a bit sketchy when we havn't thought it all over. _________________

| I was going to say this thread was only made to get an idea on how many would attend if something like this was planned.
I'd like to also add, in no way are we underestimating the amount of organising and responsibilities we will have in making this happen. Before even going into planning, I'd say/suggest not only research all the options on how to go about planning this... but seek help and advice from people who run events like this. _________________
