Puffed sleeves with no gathering?
Post By Rolly. 10/07/09, 11:25 am

So um, yeah, after having searched the net and coscom, I didn't manage to find anything that would help a me to make puff sleeves with no gathering at all. sad

I managed to find Crafty_dame's tutorial on LJ, but it has gathering on the top.

It is even possible to make a puff sleeve with no gathering at all? :O

I need some help on how to measure and make my own pattern for these sleeves as well.

Help puys, please? :3

I am 99% sure you can't do it without *any* gathering. You could possibly get away with it at the bottom of the sleeve, but to have the shaping you want at the shoulder seasm you are gonna have to gather it.

With the no-seam at the bottom, you need to do it like a leg o' mutton sleeve, a la raging victorian fashion. The shape of the sleeve is retarded, but loks great once it's sewn...my connection isn't good enough at the moment to get you a pic, but you should be able to find something. It'll be difficult to get the sleeve the length you want though - afaik it works best with long sleeves (past elbow length). Experiment though! And GOOD LUCK GRASSHOPPER.

O holy, great, mighty Static - *worships orz*

Oh, darn.... looks like I will still have to gather the top. >_< *curses you, anime defying gravity clothing*

When you have a better connection, would you mind..... guiding me through? D: Preferably.... like you're teaching a total noob? (With gathering at the top)

lol, I'm actually doing them on a commission at the moment so I'll take photos of what I mean. It might not be 'til next week though, I won't be back in my sewing place until then. Not for long, anyway...I have a costume party tomorrow night what I need a little dress for, but this is not a PG-rated costume. So I'll shut up now before Kitten catches wind of it.

SO YEAH I'LL TOTALLY HELP

I LOVE YOU STATIC <3 chuu~!

These sleeves are probably what's stumping me the most at the moment. DX

Oh, and an extra question while I'm at it, for boot covers, I bought some drill today.... they don't seem to be able to stand up by themselves though. :/ These are non-stretch boot covers... like the ones in the Godsavethequeen fashions tutorial.

Do you mean stand up in that it falls down?

I'm not sure, but I'm worried that the fabric may not be stiff/firm enough for it to stand up on its own. :/

Like, without my foot it it. Or something. D:

Oh, also, for the puffed sleeves, on the bottom, would I need to put elastic in it at all....?

No, as long as the sleeve is wide enough to allow your arm to fit through with a bit of room to move.

Just out of curiosity, is there any reason you don't want to use gathering? I don't think it would look out of place at all - gathering isn't usually all that noticeable, anyway...

On the boot cover thing: try making a facing for the top edge that's been stiffened, either with vilene or a heavier weight fabric - topstitch the seam to the inside, on the facing, to get it to sit better and hide it.

I don't want to use gathering because on all the official pictures I've found, there doesn't seem to be any gathering on the sleeves... so I was trying to go for accuracy. :/

But if almighty Static says it won't be noticeable, then it should be not a big problem! o7

I'll start making my boot covers ASAP... >o< and see how well it stands up. If it doesn't go the way I hope it does, I'll be asking for advice again. :)

You could work with an undersleeve- make a puffy gathered undersleeve in the normal way for support and shape- then sort of mold a smooth oversleeve over it (using heat to shrink -or prehaps a thick knit). (I have no idea how this would work!- ramble ramble)

i think your best bet would to be gather slightly - it'll give you a much nicer puff, and barely be noticeable. (:
