How to make a skirt puffy?
Post By Interstella. 20/05/12, 11:12 am

Trisana and I are looking to do a Lolita cosplay, but we need to know how to make the skirt all poofy. We have nylon netting and wanna know if there's an easy way of giving a skirt volume.

The skirt is only knee length...

Anyone got any suggestions?

You can make yourself a puffy petticoat. :) You could also try making a hoopskirt, although you might have trouble sitting down in it.

Thanks!

I didn't realize we'd need quite that much tule.... We only got two or three meters....thought that would be enough for one person lol

You can try making yourself a hoopskirt (tutorial) if you don't want to use that much fabric.

Something like this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/clothing/wedding/bridal-accessories/other/auction-475654954.htm

Just a heads up - lolita isn't cosplay :) It's a fashion style of its own

Petticoats are the best bet for a shorter skirt - if you don't have enough netting/tulle to make a full petti, you can try layering skirts underneath (those slightly puffy "gothic" skirts that are commonly seen are a good option) - though the shape of the poof won't be the same as with a proper petti

Depending on when you need it, you could invest in a nice poofy petticoat? I know some really nice and pretty cheap stores on Taobao that I could link you to where I've bought lots of quality petticoats for about $30-$40 and have held up for years :)

Oh, and there should be some more information here http://lolita-handbook.livejournal.com/
The shop list is outdated, but the information might be helpful~

Socky: Unless you are cosplaying a character which dresses in Lolita. Hoping the animators got the lolita bit right.

Isn't hoop skirts pretty much out for lolita, and petticoats in? Although Socky is right, hoops and short skirts are normally only for ridiculous runway shows.

the general standard for lolita skirt to my knolege of wearing it, due to wearing two everyday has been about right about your knee. which for me is about 45-50cm long, so i tend to make my petticoats 45cm and my skirts 50+lace so my petts dont poke out when i walk and so my skirt doesn't dead drop which is when the pett is too short for the skirt.
classic styles are longer and sweet styles are shorter.
the petticoat to make also depends on the skirt/dress shape, ether a cupcake (gathered waist with more fullness at the waist less at the hem) or a-line (shaped smoother waist with more fullness at the hem )

there are sooooooooooo many ways to make petts
heres one simple method if you havent aready made one by now sweatdrop
the easyest way for me to make a cupcake (more popular in sweet) has been

a length of "fabric" normal about 114cm wide
cut strips down the width the length/depth of the pett/skirt (e.g 45cm) until the long edge (114cm) makes
your waist X 3 ( 80cm X 3 = 240)
now sew these together down the 45cm long edge.
at this point you can ether gather the top straight into a waist band (not much pouf) or if you are using a base fabric you can ruffle/tulle tiers on to give heaps of more pouf.

to do ruffle/tulle tiers cut strips of tulle/fabric about 20cm deep down the width of the fabric
until you get around about (240X3=720 for one layer or X6=1440 for two layers) this is an estamite because gathering throws out perfect calibration, plus the fabric being used will give a different gather ratio.

i usey just cut tons of strips sew the short sides together and gather the long edge and then you just mark the tier levels from the bottom up and sew the gathered fabric on.

after that just fold over the top of the petti sewing a channel for elastic about 2.5cm wide leave a hole at the end for the elastic to go through and your good thumbsup
to make an a-line using with method just use a full cirle skirt as the base instead of widths of fabric.

sorry if i rushed or missed out info it's just i dont know if youve made one by now and out of all my cosplays, only ONE didn't have a petticoat to go with it, everything else ether had super petts or hoops plus petts,
GAH it's like my whole cosplay life is just PETTICOATS gonk

hoped i helped in some way or another <3
