Eye contacts for cosplay, questions

I've always wanted to try coloured contacts,
optometrist says it would be fine with my eyes.

I just have a few questions

how often do they need to be replaced?
where to buy?
Recomended time to buy before con?
Contacts to avoid?
basically if you use them often, or have worn them at a con before,
I wanna know just how safe contacts really are. ^^;;
