What would you like to see at Overload 11?
By Sybarite. 04/01/11, 03:24 pm |
| ....man it'll take a while for me to get used to the new name.
So as some of you guys already know Overload had changed its name and changed its prices.
It is now a two day event, $5 dollar entry (I guess that means $10 if you're going on both days. not sure), and the prices for tables has increased as well.
Artist tables are $35 for one day, $100 for two days. Craft tables and merchandise tables are of course even more hefty.
So just looking for some pointers, and general ideas that will hopefully help out those artists that want to make some profit, but dunno what fandom they should draw. LIKE ME OTL
So yea. WHAT TYPE OF ART WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUY? WHAT ART DO YOU RECOMMEND I SELL? Any advice would be helpful and greatly appreciated XDDD
some of my art included below. I dabble in a variety of styles= =
P.S. I am thinking about opening commissions. They are guranteed to be original work and not for sale at any convention, though prices and stuff are still yet to be finalised, so leave a comment of whether you will be interested or just how much you recommend I should charge would be cool too. XD

| ........................YOUR ART WOULD SELL QUICKLY LIKE A WOODEN VILLAGE ON FIRE.
♥♥♥
Urm. Obvious advice is to do popular seriies or nostalgic series (like pokemon, or dragon ball z)
Unfortunately original art doesn't sell unless you're fantastic and your style appeals to the majority.... which i don't think youll have a problem =P
Nowadays I see a lot of people doing keychains, so try and figure out a unique stationary item people would want instead? IDONTKNOW.
Oh and PLEASE put your prices as high as you think your art is worth. I would totally buy an A4 print for $10-15 [hi-quality] or an original piece for $30. Art shouldn't be so cheap ;___; I was really sad that the artists last year had really low prices (I mean, yay for us consumers but seriously?) _________________

Lol thanks for the vote of confidence hun. ♥
I'm so lost in the loop as to which series are popular now days. I just know the ones I love, like Kuroshitsuji (haven't watched 2nd series yet OTL) Gintama, Hetalia, etc. I don;t even watch DuRarara OTLLLLL so any ideas?
I'm not really ready to risk original art at Overload yet, but I'm definately keen to do Chibi stickers? just dunno where to print is all LOL.
Awww yea I get why you would be upset that art is not being sold as much as they are worth, but I think reasonably priced art, like a $8~10 A3 poster, will boost the sales of art and consumer spirit at Overload in general, which is what the convention needs at the moment. But yea, ofcourse I would put up some original water colour stuff or pencil sketches for a much higher price XDDD

| Uhhh, why not make a anime series-themed notebook for stationary?? 8D Like a mini-one. But that might cost a bit of $ to reproduce massively, so maybe only have a few? Maybe note papers? Ummm... bus pass stickers? 8D Um, personally I prefer practical pieces since well... they're practical.
Oh, and your art is like, SO AWESOME OMG AssafJDGJdsggLSGDS I WISH I COULD DRAW THAT WELL ;A;
For stickers I'm sure there's plain sticker paper that you can print on. I used to get some from school and draw on it and like, stick things. :3 Our teacher was really nice, haha. |

| I WOULD BUY ALL OF YOUR ARRRTTT <333
I bought a lot of keyrings/phone charms/bookmarks last year, but I really want to buy more posters if I can go this year.
I think original pieces in the watercolour might sell well? Or like the style in the third digital. That ones really pretty *A*
I know someone was selling wallet cards last year, they were really cool. |

| *^* Your art is AMAZING! I love every one of them. I think you can sell original artwork as well! (You are certainly skilled! ) If you go to DO next year (2012) as well, then I'll buy your prints! ^^ [I'm thinking of selling some next year if my art gets better. Needs extra cash to go to Japan trip... ;A;] |

| So what do you wanna see at Overload 11
By hyolee123. 05/01/11, 02:49 pm |
| Just thought I'd ask. As I'll be sharing a table and I was wondering what I should practice for later this year.
I know the obvious popular fandoms as such. Popular animes and video games.
But I wanna know what YOU (yes YOU) Wanna see. What kind of styles you're looking into as such. I know I myself can't draw chibi's to save my life. But other artists our there could use this information. Imagine it as a database of IDEAS HERE!!!
Any specific characters you'd think are popular and would sell well, something you wanna see ect...
ideas are welcome 8D |

| I want to see K-ON. Oh, and i've been loving fashion illustrations as of late :)
Also, I would have a mini freak out if i found someone presenting some good Saint Seiya artwork.. but that's just me dreaming. It's rare to encounter Saint Seiya fans, and even rarer still to find Saint Seiya fans who can draw the characters well. Generally, style doesn't necessarily matter much to me as long as it's done skillfully. It would be great if artists would stick to their strengths instead of doing something out of their comfort zone simply because they think it will sell better. Like, i'd much prefer to see good artwork of a series i don't know than to find bad artwork of those I that adore.
Of course, that's just me and my own preferences. I don't hold it against artists for doing what they want, whatever it may be. It's your artwork, you're free to present it however you feel fit :) |

| Wow, that's pretty impressive work. I especially love the traditional stuff.
Hm.. there was a thread pretty much just like this in the art section; so i'll just repeat what i mentioned there. As long as you stick to your strengths, i'll be happy to see whatever you produce. If you must find something popular, then try and do something which would go well with your style. |

Yea, I'm mostly worried about the production cost. If the sticker paper costs anything like photo paper then I'm screwed. I think It'll just be more economically strategic to out source my printing. Though, I will have to go through some market research.
idk, maybe a post-it note pad? XDDDD
haha thanks lolsex. <3

AWW Maddy you cutey. XD. I think I will try the watercolour thing too. Though the one I got on the first post is the first time I tried water colour in 4 years. aha...ha.... fingers crossed that it'll work out.
The Hetalia wallet cards don't fit into my wallet *EPIC SAD FACE*, so I just blutacked them all on my wall right next to my vintage world map. All in order of pairing preference <3. I can't wait to see what Angela churns out this year.

Thank you so much XD. I'm just not a confident person when it comes to selling my stuff. I mean, there are so many amazing artists out there, and quite a number at Overload too, I feel kind of....shy. Not really a normal occurance, which is saying something. It'd be great for you to get a table, haha the revenue always help, but it's just a great way to meet people, I'm guessing from your comment that you won't be making it this year though? =(
Hope your Japan trip plans go smoothly, I don't ever think I'll survive one due to language barriers and me feeling like a freakin landmark there due to my height, but haha if things go well I might be able to go to Russia with grandparent. Whoohoo for them knowing the language.

Thank you, I'm flattered. I've been a fan of your work so it means a lot to me. XD
I agree, as long as the art itself is impressive I don't really care about what fandom it's of. I think I've yet to decide which of my techniques or media is my strength, per se, but I think I feel very comfortable with the traditional media, especially the pencil sketches, so thank you, I'll see to include those, maybe some original work.

| I agree, with the above. I mean, I'm REALLY difficult to please when it comes to art, and doesn't keep up with the fandom trends, but at the end of the day, I'll just drool over whatever I think is beautiful, and in all honesty, isn't that the definition of art anyway?
When it comes to personal preference though, I'm all for traditional vintage patterns and a semi-realistic approach, a touch of surrealism would finish that nicely. But I find colour to be my top priority. Not exactly meaning bright fluro rainbowgasmic eye burners, however satisfying they may be, but a selection of palettes that evokes what the artist is trying to communicate to the audience and balance the overall image. I particularly like soft muted colours in a pencil sketch, on water colour paper, because I'm just a paper texture whore. =D
Fandoms I would like to see though are Hetalia, especially Spamano and USUK cause they're what I breathe, and Gintama is always loved XDDDD |

| No problem :) Just a word of caution, though.
Even if i say i like anything that has been produced skillfully, same cannot be said for most others that attend DO. Many come looking for your standard anime stuff; genuine art appreciators are very few in comparison.
Like, although my fashion illustrations garnered a bit of interest at my art school, they seemed pretty unpopular at DO. So taking into account the kind of audience you're catering to is very important if you want to see sales. It's just my opinion, but playing to your strengths alone probably won't cut it; it would be smarter to play to your strengths in a way that fits the interests of your target audience. |

@ thread Although I haven't been to any of DOs, but I also agree with the comments above! I'm not really picky about fandoms as if they look pretty, I'd probably buy it! ^^
